Retreat Practice Overview

Dear Friends

The aim of this summer retreat is to allow existing and new Sangha members to come together and deepen their practice. The bedrock of this practice is mindful living, and Micklepage offers a beautiful rural setting to do this. While the programme is subject to change here is an overview of the retreat schedule. Please also feel free to call John on 07786074683 if you want to discuss any aspect of the retreat.

On arrival on Thursday evening retreatants can settle into Micklepage and enjoy a light supper while maintaining an informal silence. We then come together formally to begin the retreat with an evening meditation where we enter Noble Silence. This continues through the retreat to create space within us to notice how we experience our lives and what emerges in the silence. This is a rare gift in our busy, noisy lives and a valuable part of the retreat experience.

Friday and Saturday will follow a similar rhythm, beginning with a morning Practice of chanting, silent and guided meditations, walking, and a reading. This is followed by some gentle mindful stretching outdoors. Remaining in silence we enjoy breakfast together, aware of the food we eat and company around us.

After helping to prepare the days meals we come together to explore our Practice. The guided meditations will be based on the Discourse on Full Awareness of Breathing and group discussions will offer the chance to reflect on our experience. We will also have time to explore our breath through simple yoga practices led by Bridget, an experienced yoga practioner.

For both beginner and experienced Practitioner, it is an opportunity to explore what our Practice is, and how it is expressed through our lives. This can be explored not only on the meditation cushion but just as importantly as we eat, rest and move around Micklepage together. As well as the group practice there is time for personal reflection, relaxation and walks in the Sussex countryside.

We come out of Noble Silence on Sunday to enjoy a light lunch together before tidying up and leaving.

Park Place is home to a small community of Indian Roman Catholic nuns who run a thriving pastoral centre for people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs who are interested in spiritual matters. Please see their website for information on Park Place www.parkplacecentre.org.uk

The Gathering will be catered by Park Place, with help on the vegan menu by order members, and can accommodate a maximum of 60 bookings. Camping is not available. There are subsidised places for those on Benefits, please see the booking form.

We invite you to bring your family to join our annual family-orientated retreat.

We will provide a mindful, loving, supportive atmosphere; to deepen the practice  in a family unit, which includes parents, children, other family members and friends; all are welcome.

This retreat offers a practice resource for parents, and an environment for the
children enriched by mindfulness practices appropriate for them, but also with fun and games, creative activities, and the experience of the support and embracing qualities of practising parents and adults.

Family practice is a unique practice, and an aspect of  ‘engaged’ Buddhism  that is crucial to the wellbeing of society.  We will aim to meet the needs of parents, along with fostering a deeper experience of mindfulness practice for both parents and children .

All adults facilitating the retreat will be experienced in working with families and children.

Cost for this retreat will be £200 per adult, £100 per child – under 5s have free places.  There are a few camping places at a slight reduction -  please enquire about those.
